Video transcript:
When tragedy strikes, we often ask, "God where are you?"
To what degree can we rely on God to help us? Is He really someone we can turn to at all … in times of crisis as well as times of calm?
Yes.
God is the Creator of the universe who yearns for us to know Him. That's why we're all here. It’s His desire that we rely on and experience His strength, love, justice, holiness and compassion. So He says to all who are willing, "Come to Me."1
Unlike us, God knows what will happen tomorrow, next week, next year, and the next decade. He says, "I am God, and there is no one like me, declaring the end from the beginning."2
He knows what will happen in the world. More importantly, He knows what will occur in your life and He can be there for you, if you've chosen to include Him in your life. He tells us that He can be "our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble."3
That doesn't mean that those who know God will escape difficult times. They won't. When wars or rampant disease cause suffering and death, those who know God will be involved in that suffering too.
However, if we go through our problems in life while knowing God, we can react to them with a different perspective and with a strength that is not our own. No problem is too hard for God to fix. He is bigger than all the problems that can hit us, and we’re not left alone to deal with them.
God's Word tells us: "The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him."4 And, "The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on Him in truth."5
If you truly turn to God, He will care for you as no one else does, and in a way that no one else can.
Though problems seem insurmountable to us, we have an incredibly capable God who reminds us, "Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh; is there anything too hard for Me?"6
He invites us…
“Come to Me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”7
Now here is an important question. How good do we have to be for God to accept us?
We know that many times we’ve given into what we know is wrong, no matter the impact it had on others or ourselves.
And how many times have we stiff-armed God and lived like we could run our own lives just fine without God? The Bible says that "We all, like sheep, have gone astray; each of us has turned to his own way."8
Our sin has distanced us from God and we face His judgment and condemnation.
However, out of His love for us, God has provided a way for us to be forgiven and reconciled to Him. Our relationship with Him can be fully restored because of what God did for us.
The Bible says that the penalty for sin is death.9 So that we would not be condemned and die eternally separated from Him, Jesus died in our place.
It's like a father who would take on his child’s cancer in their place if He could.
Jesus took all of our sin on Himself and was crucified on a cross for us. He paid the penalty of death so that we could be forgiven.
They placed His body in a tomb, with guards at the entrance. Why were soldiers guarding His tomb? Because everyone had heard Jesus say that three days after being killed and buried, He would rise from the dead and physically come back to life, proving that He was the Son of God just as He said He was.
Three days later, the tomb was found empty, and many people were seeing Him alive again in His normal body, having conversations with Him and eating with Him.
John, one of Jesus’s followers wrote in Scripture that "God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life."10 It’s your choice.
He wants us to go through this life knowing Him, being guided by Him, in friendship with Him. And eventually be with Him in heaven.
We know that this world is not the way that God intended. We instinctively know that there must be a much better place to live, free from heart-wrenching difficulties and pain. And God tells us that in heaven there will be no more crying, death or pain.
Again, the choice is yours. The difficult events we experience in this life are horrific enough. Refusing an eternal relationship with God, which Jesus offers you, would be worse.
Jesus promised to enter our lives if we simply ask Him. He said, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him."11
Right now, you can begin a relationship with God by asking Him to enter your life. Here’s a prayer you could say to Him:
"God, I have turned away from You, living my own way. But I want to change that. I want to know You. Jesus, thank You for dying for me. I ask You to come into my life right now. Thank You for your forgiveness and for giving me a relationship with You. Amen."
